Elms Endoscopy Center's Tonya Wagner: 5 tips to prepare for active shooters at ASCs

Elms Endoscopy Center leader Tonya Wagner, RN, penned an article for the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology's Prevention Strategist publication focused on active shooter situations.

"There are many types of healthcare facilities, ranging from large hospitals to free-standing ambulatory surgery centers," wrote Ms. Wagner. "Each facility needs to actively commit to pairing up with local law enforcement agencies and emergency personnel. One of the most important things a healthcare facility can do is invite all emergency personnel to do a walk-through."

Here are five tips from the article:

1. Security and safety — Locking mechanisms between waiting room and procedure room doors, bullet-proof glass and other internal steps.

2. Communicate and collaborate — Install a panic button for receptionists to notify authorities and use plane language to inform colleagues and patients.

3. Organize and obtain necessary equipment — Make sure there is an emergency room for patients and visitors that includes necessary supplies.

4. Prepare and protect — Plan for chaotic situations.

5. Educate and evaluate — Work with the local emergency preparedness team to train for emergency situations and allow them to provide feedback for your plan. Conduct drills to prepare staff and make improvements.
