The Centers for Disease Control and prevention has partnered with health officials and disease researchers in Sierra Leone to launch a clinical trial for an Ebola vaccine, reports TheHill.com.
Over 6,000 volunteers in Sierra Leone are already being vaccinated as part of the trial. As the first trial in West Africa, it could take a while and may be more useful for preventing future outbreaks than it would be in the current epidemic, according to the repot.
"We don't know whether this vaccine will be the Ebola prevention tool we're all eager for, but we hope that what we learn from STRIVE will help us save lives during this and future Ebola outbreaks," Anne Schuchat, MD, director of CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, wrote in a statement, as reported by TheHill.com.
