Colorado adult dies from plague — 5 things to know

Officials announced an adult in Pueblo County died from the plague, according to CNN.

 Here are five notes:

1. Authorities have not reported the name of the individual who died.

2. This is the first case of someone in Pueblo County contracting the plague since 2004.

3. The adult likely contracted the plague from a dead rodent or animal. A dead prairie dog is the only animal as of yet confirmed to have the plague in the immediate area.

4. Colorado is not the only region recently affected by the plague. A young camper in California was hospitalized after contracting the plague. The child is in recovery and no other individuals in the camping area reported symptoms.

5. The CDC reports about seven people contract the plague each year in the United States. Of these cases, 80 percent have been in the bubonic form.
