Hospira, a Lake Forest, Ill.-based provider of injectable drugs and infusion technologies, has introduced its Smart Pump, a device fostering I.V.-EMR interoperability, which Charleston (W. Va.) Area Medical Center is implementing.
Here are five notes:
1. The company connected the company's Plum A+ IV infusion devices with Hospira MedNet safety software and the EMR.
2. This interoperability of systems was implemented at the four hospitals in the Charleston Area Medical Center Health System.
3. Hospira is now the first smart pump manufacturer to integrate infusion systems with a third-party major EMR platform.
4. This technology allows nurses to automatically program infusion pumps with the pharmacy medication order and confirm the order before patients receive the medications.
5. The infusion information then goes to the EMR, providing for proper preparation of I.V. medication.
"This solution will help improve medication management processes by connecting the I.V. pump, medication order, patient and record together," said Ron Moore, RN, CNO of CMAC.
