CDC & FDA issues alert to healthcare facilities — 4 notes

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a health alert for facilities to review their procedures for device reprocessing, according to APIC.

Here are four notes:

1. The alert advises providers and facilities to properly maintain, clean and disinfect or sterilize reusable medical devices.

2. Recently, lapses in compliance with recommended reprocessing procedures have occurred.

3. The lapses have lead to a rising number of patient notifications concerning possible exposures.

4. Healthcare professionals are strong advised to share this information with other facilities and colleagues.
