Age, location affects outpatient orthopedic patient satisfaction: 5 insights

Patient factors such as age and geographic location can affect satisfaction of outpatient orthopedic patients, according to a study published in The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery.

Here are five insights:

1. Researchers reviewed patient satisfaction scores from 12,177 clinical encounters at an academic orthopedic outpatient clinic between December 2010 and October 2013.

2. Factors including age, sex, employment status, type of health insurance, zip code and orthopedic subspecialty were recorded.

3. Age was found to be strongly associated with patient satisfaction, with younger patients reporting less satisfaction.

4. Travel distance was also associated with patient satisfaction. Patients who lived close by reported less satisfaction as compared with patients who lived farther away.

5. "A more complete knowledge of the factors that influence patient satisfaction may enable better insight into the interpretation of current patient satisfaction metrics and may allow physicians and hospitals to improve their delivery of care," noted study authors.
