75% of adults concerned about security of their healthcare data: 4 findings

Many U.S. adults are not comfortable with their healthcare data security, according to a University of Phoenix College of Health Professions School of Health Services Administration survey.

The survey received responses from 2,031 adults, 18 years old and older.

Here are four findings:

1. Of the respondents surveyed, 76 percent are concerned about the safety of their healthcare records against hackers.

2. Older generations reported more concern, with 80 percent of adults in their 40s and 83 percent of adults in their 50s being unsure about the security.

3. The survey found 55 percent of adults are comfortable with sharing healthcare records across healthcare networks nationally and globally, while 45 percent are not comfortable with this sharing.

4. Those respondents in their 20s and 30s are more comfortable sharing their healthcare data.

"In the digital age of healthcare, protecting patients' private information from cyber criminals while still making it readily available to the patients themselves is a complex challenge," said Mark Johannsson, DHSc, academic dean, University of Phoenix School of Health Services Administration.
