6 threats the CDC plans to combat in 2016

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention outlined six threats keeping them up at night that they will work to combat in 2016.

Here are the six threats:

1. Ebola

What happened in 2015

• Developed emergency operations centers in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone to combat the Ebola threat in Africa

• Launched an Ebola Vaccine trial in Sierra Leona. Since its inception, the trial has vaccinated more than 7,000 participants

Going forth into 2016

• Will continue to conduct research and help the African Union

• Maintain its mission to stay at zero cases

2. Antibiotic Resistance

2015

• Learned healthcare facilities can coordinate their efforts to prevent the spread of bacteria resistant to antibiotics

• Released guidelines for how state and local health departments can alert local facilities when antibiotic-resistant bacteria are reported in their area

2016

• Will launch AR Patient Safety Atlas, an interactive web platform, with open access to antibiotic resistance data on healthcare-associated infection.

• Plans to launch its first antibiotic stewardship report describing progress in prescribing practices in human medicine.

3. Global health security

2015

• The U.S. government and 30 countries vowed to work together to move the Global Health Security Agenda forward

• In Korea, the "Seoul Declaration" included the shared vision, effective organization, and future direction of GHSA

•Awarded 51 cooperative agreements to organizations working in 24 countries to launch GHSA and Ebola preparedness activities

• Awarded nearly $100 million to support GHSA and Ebola preparedness work

2016

• The United States will work with 30 countries to create a five-year plan to achieve and sustain each of the GHSA targets

• The Netherlands will host the third GHSA high-level event

• Plans to increase the number of disease detectives on the ground

• Create secure and safe lab networks to detect deadly microbes

• Enhance response to public health emergencies

• Upgrade systems to track health threats

4. Smoking:

2015

• Launched 2015 Tips from Former Smokers campaign.

• 2014 data released 16.8% of U.S. adults were current cigarette smokers.

• For the first time, e-cigarette use among middle and high school students exceeded use of every other tobacco product in 2014

2016

• Will continue to support the Tips from Former Smokers ads

• Vital Signs will focus on youth and tobacco use in January 2016

5. Prescription Drug Overdose

2015

• Released "Prevention for States" to provide states the resources and support to stop the epidemic

• Creating opioid prescribing guidelines to help primary care physicians give safer, more effective care.

2016

• Plans to launch opioid prescribing guidelines for chronic pain in 2016

• Give 50 states funding for the Prevention for States program to better track opioid and heroin abuse and deaths and investigate health emergencies related to opioid abuse

6. Lab Safety

2015

• Saw much progress in lab safety including creating the new Office of the Associate Director for Laboratory Science and Safety

• Welcomed the inaugural class of laboratory leadership service fellows

2016

• Aims to get as close to zero risk as possible
