6 key points about central line-associated bloodstream infections

Central line-associated bloodstream infections are dangerous and often quite costly, with health systems spanning the nation working to combat these infections.

Here are six key points on CLABSI based on CDC and The Joint Commission data:

1. CLABSIs decreased 46 percent across U.S. hospitals from 2008 to 2013.

2. From 2001 to 2009, there was a 58 percent decrease in CLABSIs which estimates project saved 6,000 U.S. lives and $414 million in excess healthcare costs in 2009.

3. Annually, 30,100 CLABSIs occur at intensive care units and acute care facilities.

4. In 2008, CDC data found there were 37,000 CLABSIs among patients receiving outpatient hemodialysis.

5. Researchers estimate healthcare facilities can prevent between 65 percent and 70 percent of CLABSIs if they implement evidence-based strategies.

6. Throughout Michigan 103 ICUS implemented evidence-based interventions and improved patient safety practices, thereby yielding a 60 percent reduction in baseline CLABSI rates in a 36-month study period.
