4 things to know about wide variation seen in California's healthcare quality, resource use

A report, published by the nonprofit Integrated Healthcare Association, has shown wide variation in healthcare quality and resource use across California.

Here are four things to know:

1. The report states that there is a more than 40 percentage point gap in the colorectal cancer screening rate between the highest performing California county — Solano: 76.4 percent — and the lowest performing county — Modoc: 33.5 percent.

2. It also states that health plan products that rely primarily on integrated care delivery networks, such as HMOs and Medicare Advantage, generally have higher quality scores without using more resources.

3. The analysis is based on a new online tool called HEDIS by Geography.

4. The online tool allows users to examine performance on six clinical quality measures and three resource use measures by geography or health plan product line.
