4 key thoughts into physicians' ability to turn away unvaccinated children

The healthcare community is divided as to whether guidelines should allow physicians to refuse to see unvaccinated children, as these patients may pose as a risk to others, according to Chicago Tribune.

Here are four key thoughts:

1. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently released guidelines stating it was "acceptable" for pediatricians to refuse to see unvaccinated children.

2. However, this option is a "last resort." The guidelines say this is acceptable if the physician practices in an area with an ample number of other providers and after the pediatrician makes several attempts to educate the family about vaccinations' benefits.

3. Other healthcare providers claim it is important for providers to see unvaccinated patients and their parents as they can continually make an effort to educate them about vaccination.

4. The academy and the CDC advise parents to vaccinate their children unless there is a medical reason preventing them from doing so. Some parents believe vaccinations are not safe or think forcing vaccination violates their personal rights.
