3 tips when disclosing medical errors

JAMA Professionalism published an article highlighting key ways for physicians to disclose medical errors.

Here are three tips:

1. When telling patients about a medical error, the information should come with an apology. Do not withhold information from patients concerning the error.

2. Staff members involved in the event should all participate in a review of the error. Then, they should identify systematic issues that may have contributed to the error and work to fix those issues.

3. Contact the institution's risk management group, quality assurance department and/or malpractice carrier about the error.
