10 key notes on measles outbreaks: 2008-2015

Measles outbreaks shot up last year, and are poised to continue growing this year.

Here are 10 key notes measles outbreaks in the United States, based on statistics from the Centers for Disease Control.

1. There have been 121 cases of the measles in the United States in 2015, as of Feb. 6.

2. Seventeen states and the District of Columbia have reported measles cases.

3. Its estimated 85 percent of the cases are part of a large, ongoing multi-state outbreak linked to a California amusement park.

4. In 2014, there were 644 cases of the measles total in 27 states.

5. From 2001 to 2013, the number of measles cases reported was often less than 100, although in 2011 it was slightly more than 200 and in 2013 it approached 200.

6. The United States experienced 23 measles outbreaks last year, with the largest being among the unvaccinated Amish communities in Ohio.

7. Last year's cases were traced back to measles brought in from the Philippines.

8. In 2013, there were 11 measles outbreaks with three being 20 cases or more.

9. The World Health Organization European Region also reports cases of the measles were brought into the United States in 2011 from France, and 30 European countries reported an increase in measles.

10. There was an increase in measles cases in 2008 among communities of unvaccinated people.
