10 states with the lowest, highest tax rates

Alaska is the state with the lowest tax rate, while Illinois is the state with the highest, according to personal finance site WalletHub.

In a report released March 5, WalletHub determined the states with the highest and lowest tax rates. The site compared the 50 states and Washington, D.C., across four types of taxation: real estate tax, vehicle property tax, income tax, and sales and excise tax.
