AMA: 5 strategies to avoid burnout in a leadership role

Annie McKee, PhD, a senior fellow at the Pittsburgh-based University of Pennsylvania and the director of the university's PennCLO Executive Doctoral Program, interviewed 35 CMOs and compiled their responses into five strategies for coping with stress, according to an American Medical Association press release.

Here's are the five strategies.

1. Understand and be aware of emotions, skills and abilities. CMOs described having “heightened sense of cognition" when they consider their emotions before responding to a problem.

2. Better manage your emotions and behaviors. Similar to point one, by understanding emotions and behaviors and consciously making positive choices, leaders can better manage stressful situations.

3. Actively listen and understand others. Leaders should make efforts to listen to other people and understand their positioning.

One CMO said ,"Actively listening to someone and understanding where they're coming from, and understanding who they are makes you much, much less likely to go off on them or get into a situation that’s stressful with that individual."

4. Stay connected to one another. Leaders encourage and promote teamwork. Shifting tasks from one person to a team reduces stress because team members can work together to accomplish tasks instead of fielding the burden by themselves.

5. Acknowledge and manage conflict. Of the interviewed CMOs, 89 percent responded that conflict-management allows them to better deal with stress.
