ASC Leader to Know: Tom Yerden, CEO of TRY Health Care Solutions

Tom Yerden, CEO of TRY Health Care Solutions in Salmon, Idaho, has more than 28 years of experience in the ASC industry, spanning the development of 70 surgery centers and the founding of Aspen Healthcare — later sold to a national firm — in 1992. He has held COO and CEO positions in several healthcare systems and large physician group practices, where he developed outpatient surgery centers and new outpatient surgical delivery systems.

An expert on ASC development and management, Mr. Yerden commented in January on the growth of hospital/physician joint ventures to Becker's ASC Review. He joined many of his colleagues in noting that 2009 was a big year for hospital/physician joint ventures and market consolidation.

"I see a lot of mergers for surgery centers in the future, both between existing ASCs and through joint ventures and hospital acquisition of ASCs," he said. "Hospitals view a physician-hospital joint venture or outright acquisition of a surgery center as one way to expand/protect market share and complement their physician relationship strategy."

He said that while hospital/physician partnerships are on the rise, many potential joint ventures fail because the two parties are hesitant to place their success in the hands of a former rival. "Some hospital-physician joint ventures never survive the transition from a 'spirit of negotiation' to a 'spirit of partnership'," he said. "Regardless of the strength of the projections, those joint ventures that I have seen fail [do so] due to lack of trust among the parties."

In addition to his work developing ASCs, Mr. Yerden is a national speaker and author on ASC issues and the host of an ASC governing board retreat program in Salmon, Idaho.
