ASC Industry Leader to Know: Steven Geringer of AmSurg

Steven Geringer has served as chairman of the board of AmSurg in Nashville, Tenn., since June 2009, when he succeeded Tom Cigarran, who had served as chairman for 17 years before becoming an AmSurg director.

Commenting on Mr. Geringer's appointment, AmSurg President and CEO Christopher Holden said, "We are confident of Steve's capabilities and leadership and value the experience, insight and judgment that he has provided the company since he joined our board as a director 12 years ago."

AmSurg acquires, develops and operates ASCs in partnership with physician practice groups throughout the United States. Prior to joining the company as a director in 1996, Mr. Geringer worked as president and CEO of pharmacy benefits manager PCS Health Systems in Minneapolis. He became president of PCS in 1993, when the company merged with Clinical Pharmaceuticals, of which Mr. Geringer was founder, chairman, and CEO. He also held various senior management positions in the hospital management and managed care industry.

In addition to his work with AmSurg, Mr. Geringer has served as chairman, director and an operating partner for CredenceHealth, a provider of real-time clinical intelligence and cost reduction software for hospitals, providers and health plans based in Brentwood, Tenn., since March 2009. He has also served as chairman and director for Qualifacts Systems, a provider of web-based management information software based in Nashville, Tenn., since 2003.

Having worked with ASCs and medical software, as well as home-based counseling, foster care and private investment, Mr. Geringer has a unique and fascinating perspective on the inner workings of the healthcare industry.
