ASC Industry Leader to Know: Rob McCarville of Medical Consulting Group

Before he joined the Medical Consulting Group team in 2002, Rob McCarville was responsible for overseeing 16 separate physician practices. In that role, he built a reputation as a leader who could develop innovative strategies to increase profitability in physician practices. At MCG, he is instrumental in the planning, development and management of MCG's ASC clients and has successfully built collaborative relationships between surgeons and hospitals in ASC joint ventures.

In 2009, he spoke with Becker's ASC Review about the financial and operational challenges presented to ASCs by healthcare reform. He said joint ventures and turnarounds are attractive in the current market because "they have a proven track record … for building on an existing framework and providing quicker returns to inventors."

He added that a relationship with a hospital can benefit an ASC by offering the center a level of clout they could not otherwise attain. "Hospital [joint ventures] still provide some level of protection when dealing with the payor market," he said.

He said new legislation has halted ASC development somewhat, though it is heartening to know that government bodies are taking surgery centers more seriously as providers of quality care. "Proposed legislation has caused a more conservative approach to ASC development, but certainly has an opportunity to reinforce the legitimacy of ASCs as the most appropriate provider of outpatient surgery from an effectiveness and cost basis," he said. The most important thing for potential ASC developers to consider is the possibility of stricter financing requirements, more competition and increased quality regulations — three changes that are already having their effect on existing ASCs.

Mr. McCarville has been involved with over 20 surgery centers, where he has helped grow orthopedic, multi-specialty and surgeon-hospital joint ventures, as well as ASC billing and collecting services.

Mr. McCarville will speak at the 17th Annual Ambulatory Surgery Center Conference: Improving Profitability and Business and Legal Issues on "Why Develop an ASC and Why Now is a Great Time to Do So" on Saturday, Oct. 23 in Chicago.
