ASC Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Steven Robinson of Riverside Outpatient Surgery Center
As a board member and a practicing plastic surgeon at Riverside Outpatient Surgery Center in Columbus, Ohio, Steven L. Robinson, MD, is justifiably concerned about the future of his specialty and the ASC industry. In a 2009 interview with Becker's ASC Review, Dr. Robinson said that plastic surgery has been hit harder than most specialties by the economic downturn. Reduced discretionary spending has partnered with a decrease in cosmetic surgery, he said, while smaller, less complex procedures such as Restalyne and Botox — procedures performed in a physician's office rather than an ASC — have become more popular.
In a July interview, Dr. Robinson identified his top concerns for the future of ASCS, citing the relatively high average age of surgeons, healthcare reform and payor reimbursement contracts as potential problems. He said the finalization of healthcare reform rules will most likely lead to a "period of confusion until we know what the law really means" and predicted the need for more ASC administrators as regulations increase.
In addition to serving on the board of Riverside Outpatient Surgery Center, Dr. Robinson is an active member of the Aesthetic Society and the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. He holds staff appointments at Mount Carmel Medical Center, Riverside Methodist Hospital, Children's Hospital of Columbus and St. Ann's Hospital and is certified as a general surgeon by the American Board of Surgery and as a plastic surgeon by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
His ASC, Riverside Outpatient Surgery Center, has more than 20 co-owners and hosts a variety of specialties, including plastic surgery, ophthalmology, general surgery, ob-gyn and urology. The surgery center is operated in partnership with OhioHealth.
Dr. Robinson earned his MD from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and served two residencies — one in general surgery at Wayne State University of Michigan and the other in plastic surgery at OSU Medical Center. He also studied plastic surgery as part of an exchange program at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, Scotland. Dr. Robinson belongs to the Ohio State Medical Association, the American Medical Association and the Zollinger Society.
