ASC Industry Leader to Know: Douglas Johnson of RMC MedStone Capital in Texas

Since 2008, Douglas Johnson has served as COO of RMC MedStone Capital, a Dallas company that acquires ASCs and small, surgery-based hospitals in partnership with physicians. A seasoned professional and administrator with more than 35 years of healthcare experience, Mr. Johnson has worked with a variety of organizations — freestanding and systemic, rural and urban.

Prior to coming to RMC MedStone Capital, Mr. Johnson served as president and CEO of Surgical Management Professionals, where he was responsible for the company's strategic leadership and direction. He also worked as president and CEO of a major trauma center in the Midwest and has served at the board level in corporate and community organizations. He has worked in ASCs as well as 400-bed hospitals and has led physician hospital organizations and multi-hospital systems.

Mr. Johnson's diverse experience gives him a fascinating perspective on the healthcare system and helps him increase efficiency and stimulate growth at RMC MedStone. Mr. Johnson has advocated for physician ownership in hospitals by testifying, lobbying and writing briefs for congress. A recognized national leader on the subject of physicians' rights, he is the immediate past president of Physician Hospitals of America, a group that represents physician ownership in hospitals.

In a 2008 statement from PHA, Mr. Johnson denounced continuing efforts of opponents of physician-owned hospitals to close all hospitals with physician owners. He said, "The truth is that patients, physicians and staff prefer the physician-owned model over the traditional 'big box' impersonal system that is so prevalent today. We ask Congress to recognize this and allow physicians to continue to develop high quality, cost effective facilities that give patients a real choice where they receive their care."
