ASC Industry Leader to Know: Bill Southwick of HealthMark Partners

As president and CEO of HealthMark Partners in Nashville, Tenn., Bill Southwick leads the organization in developing the ASC turnaround strategies and joint venture structures that let HMP partner with physicians and hospitals in developing new facilities or taking over those that underperform. He has helped generate large returns on investment for joint venture parties — results born of his years of experience with physician partnership and business strategy.

Before joining HMP, Mr. Southwick formed Southwick Financial Associates. He joined HMP in 1996 when he helped to start the company out of the former Women's Health Partners. HMP is currently the parent corporation of Surgical Health Partners.

A whiz at ASC turnarounds, Mr. Southwick has helped surgery centers survive and thrive financially during his time at HMP. In 2009, he told Becker's ASC Review the economy will most likely have a negative effect on ASCs, meaning that centers must directly market themselves to large employers, health plans and available surgeons. "Take the gloves off" when making price comparisons, he advised.

In a January interview with Becker's ASC Review on increasing ASC profits, Mr. Southwick said that to recruit physicians — a key part of increasing revenue — centers "need to build relationships with physicians." He suggested engaging physicians in face-to-face meetings during after-work hours, as well as checking back from time to time.

He also stressed the need for centers to manage supply costs, the second highest expense in an ASC after staff salaries. By working closely with physicians and providing them with side-by-side comparisons on the cost of different devices and supplies, a center can "generate discussions among the doctors and [bring out] their competitive streak," he said.

Mr. Southwick attended Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., and achieved certification from the American College as a certified life underwriter and chartered financial consultant.
