10 Surgery Center Leaders on Southeastern & Southwestern State Association Boards

Here is a list of surgery center leaders who are also on the board of directors for their state ambulatory surgery center societies in the southeastern and southwestern states. Information was not available for all states or all societies.

Ross Alexander (Surgery Center of Fort Collins, Fort Colins, Colo.). Mr. Alexander is secretary of the Colorado Ambulatory Surgery Center Association and administrator of the Surgery Center of Fort Collins. The surgery center was established in 2000 and hosted U.S. Congressman Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) last year. Mr. Alexander has also been chair of CASCA's government relations committee. He previously worked as business development coordinator with Poudre Valley Health System. The surgery center is a joint venture with Poudre Valley Health System.

Tammy Burnett (The Plastic Surgery Center, Flowood, Miss.).
Ms. Burnett is the president of the Mississippi Ambulatory Surgical Center Association and administrator of The Plastic Surgical Center of Mississippi. The surgery center has five surgical suites, three minor procedure rooms and four private overnight rooms for patients who stay 23 hours. There are nine physicians performing cases at the center, including cosmetic plastic surgery, hand and arm trauma and injuries as well as reconstructive procedures.

Herbert Fechter, MD (Eye Surgery Center of Augusta, Augusta, Ga.).
Dr. Fechter is on the board of directors for the Georgia Society of Ambulatory Surgery Centers and a surgeon at Eye Surgery Center of Augusta. The center is located in the same building as the Eye Physicians and Surgeons of Augusta and has been operational since June of 1999. Equipped with surgical technology for small-incision cataract phaco emulsifiers, surgical microscopes and lasers, services at the center include cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery and corneal transplantation. The center has four operating rooms, six bay preoperative areas and a five bay postoperative area. The surgery center is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care and includes seven physicians.

Andrea M. Hyatt (Dulaney Eye Institute, Towson, Md.).
Ms. Hyatt is the president of the Maryland Ambulatory Surgery Association and administrator of Dulaney Eye Institute, an ophthalmic ambulatory surgery center. Ms. Hyatt helped open the surgery center in 1995 and has more than 22 years of experience in the ASC arena. She is also a member of several workgroups for the Maryland Health Care Commission and a member of the Commission's Health Associated Infection Advisory Committee. The ASC is Omni Eye Specialists' surgical center, and the surgeons are able to perform cataract surgery, glaucoma services, retina services and laser eye surgery.

Emilie Keene (Park Ridge Surgery Center, Columbia, S.C.).
Ms. Keene is the president of the South Carolina Ambulatory Surgery Center Association and administrator at Parkridge Surgery Center. During her time as administrator, she successfully recruited at least five physicians and negotiated managed care contracts that increased the center's net revenue by 20 percent. Parkridge Surgery Center includes several specialties, such as general surgery, orthopedics, pain management, urology and ophthalmology. The surgery center is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and is a Palmetto Health facility.

Barbara Marco (Camp Lowell Surgery Center, Tucson).
Ms. Marco is the president of the Arizona Ambulatory Surgery Center Association and administrator of Camp Lowell Surgery Center. The 15,200-square-foot facility is fully physician-owned with 24 physician investors. The surgery center opened in November 2005 and currently has six operating rooms. Specialties at the surgery center include hand surgery, podiatry, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, spine surgery, lap band and ENT. Camp Lowell Surgery Center is Medicare-certified and accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care.

Linda Nash (Manatee Surgical Center, Bradenton, Fla.).
Ms. Nash is the president of the Florida Society of Ambulatory Surgical Centers and an administrator at Manatee Surgical Center. She also serves as a principle at Global Surgical Partners. Manatee Surgical Center includes four operating rooms, three endoscopy rooms and pre- and postoperative areas. The surgery center has 21 physician owners and includes several different specialties, such as gastroenterology, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology and podiatry. The center has achieved the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval.

Donna H. Smith (The Surgery Center, Oxford, Ala.).
Ms. Smith is a past president of the Alabama Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers and administrator at The Surgery Center, which was opened in May 2000. The ASC is jointly owned by RHMC, a subsidiary of Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center and Surgery Center Associates, which is a group of local surgeons. There are 26 physician owners and 45 area surgeons bringing cases to the center. The surgeons perform general surgery, ophthalmology, oral surgery, orthopedics, gastroenterology, pain management, and urology cases, among others. The surgery center is a 15,000-square-foot facility, which was expanded in 2004, and now includes four operating rooms and two procedure rooms.

Andy Waldo (Endoscopy Center of Monroe, Monroe, La.).
Mr. Waldo is the president of the Louisiana Ambulatory Surgery Association and administrator of Endoscopy Center of Monroe. The surgery center has six physicians on staff who have all passed the certifying examination in gastroenterology. Procedures at the center include colonoscopy, esophageal dilation, capsule endoscopy, remicade infusions and proctosigmoidoscopy. The surgery center is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and is Medicare-certified.

Fiaz Zaman, MD (Summit Ambulatory Surgery Center, Houston).
Dr. Zaman is the vice president of the Texas Ambulatory Surgery Center Association and partner at Summit Ambulatory Surgery Center. He has a special interest in glaucoma, cataract and refractive surgery. He earned his medical degree at the University of Missouri in Kansas City and completed his residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. His additional training includes a fellowship in glaucoma and anterior segment disease at Houston Eye Associates. Summit Ambulatory Surgery Center is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care.
