Virginia Residents Pay More for Health Insurance Than National Average
Virginia residents who receive health insurance through their employers are paying more and more due to higher costs, as the average deductible for family health plans has risen more than 70 percent over the last five years, according to a Daily Press report.
Virginia workers pay the third-highest share of their health insurance premiums in the country, following Arkansas and Idaho, according to a report by the Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis.
The report found that Virginia employees pay more than 32 percent of their premiums costs, which is 5 percent more than the national average. The number of employers providing coverage continues to fall, now at its lowest level in 20 years. From 2009-2010, about 100,000 Virginians lost health insurance through their employer.
