The 11 things payers, providers really think about value-based care

As healthcare continues to move towards value-based care, Quest Diagnostics surveyed payers and providers on their feelings about the nation's transition to value-based care.

Here's what you should know:

1. Nearly eight in 10 physicians and health plan executives believe the value-based care movement will continue despite the government's attempt to repeal and replace the ACA.

2. Overall, 29 percent of payers and providers believe the US has a value-based healthcare system. Of physicians, 31 percent of those with less than 20 years of experience believe the U.S. has a value-based system, while only 16 percent of those with 21 years or more experience believe the same.

3. More health plan executives (70 percent) than physicians (47 percent) believe progress has been made towards payer-provider alignment.

4. Approximately 83 percent of executives believe payer-provider alignment is more important now than ever as healthcare move towards value-based care.

5. Although more physicians and health plan executives believe they have the tools to succeed under value-based care from 2016 to 2017, 53 percent of executives believe providers have the tools while only 43 percent of providers think they do.

Of physicians, 29 percent believed they had the tools for value-based care in 2016. In 2017, that percentage increased to 43 percent.

6. Seventy-five percent of health plan executives believe EHRs have everything physicians need, while only 54 percent of physicians believe the EHR are properly equipped.

7. Seventy percent of physicians do not see a link between EHRs and improved patient outcomes.

8. Seventy-seven percent of physicians that invest in HIT invest in EHRs. Seventy one percent of physicians would spend more time using EHRs if they'd offer unique insights to their patients. Approximately 87 percent of executives and physicians agree providers need access to quality measures.

9. Physicians identified six elements they want available at point of care:

  • 36 percent want performance measures that apply to individual patients
  • 29 percent want a list of gaps in care that affect quality measures
  • 21 percent want more information about a patient's history
  • 12 percent want information that helps diagnose codes accurately
  • 2 percent want something else
  • 1 percent wants none of the above

10. Eighty-five percent of executives believe payer/provider investment would accelerate the adoption rate of value-based care.

11. Seventy-seven percent of executives said technology investments have improved the value of healthcare for patients.
