Study: Health Information Exchanges Save Money on Hospital Readmissions

Hospitals can save money by using health information exchanges to reduce readmissions, according to an American Medical News report.

A health information exchange is a regional network of hospitals, physicians and other providers who can upload and access information. These exchanges, which are generally funded by grants or fees for participants, are considered the foundation for a nationwide HIE.

A study in the May issue of the Journal of the American Medical Information Association examined members of the MidSouth eHealth Alliance in Memphis. During a 13-month period in which emergency physicians were given access to patient information through a health information exchange, the hospital experienced reduced admissions and costs associated with cases for which the HIE was used.

Mark Frisse, MD, one of the study's authors, said physicians from any specialty can benefit from timely access to the information they need to provide better care.
