Several Trump-appointed HHS officials have ties to America's largest payers — 4 insights

President Donald Trump appointed several former payer lobbyists and attorneys to senior positions within HHS, The Intercept reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. The appointees work closely under HHS Secretary Tom Price, MD, who is helping to shape the Republicans' potential ACA replacement, the American Health Care Act.

2. HHS Deputy Secretary nominee Eric Hargan and Dr. Price's senior counselor Paula Stannard were both lobbyists for UnitedHealth. HHS Associate Deputy Secretary for Health Reform Randolph Wayne Pate is a past vice president for public policy at Health Care Services Corp., a payer which operates under the Blue Cross Blue Shield moniker in five states.

3. Dr. Price's Chief of Staff Lance Leggett worked for more than 40 healthcare-related clients. He disclosed receiving $801,008 in compensation for his work.

4. Finally, Dr. Price's senior counselor Keagan Lenihan was a lobbyist for McKesson Specialty Health, a drug and healthcare product distributor.
