Plagiarism Detection Software Could Detect Medical Record Cloning

Software programs designed to detect plagiarism in academic writing may be able to assist healthcare organizations and government regulators in verifying if medical records are original or if they have been cloned, according to a Government Health IT report.
Cloning of electronic medical record information continues to be a large issue for the healthcare industry, with the Obama administration issuing a warning in 2012. Recovery Audit Contractors also are on the look out for cloned entries that could lead to fraudulent claims.

HHS and the Department of Justice use many databases and tools for detecting fraudulent billing. Plagiarism detection software may be used in the near future by auditors and could help prevent providers from submitting problematic claims.
