No more surprises — New Jersey bill calls for price transparency

A New Jersey Assembly committee advanced a bill mandating physicians and hospitals to disclose in advance which of their services are not covered by a patient’s insurance network, according to the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Here are four key notes:

1. The bill aims to prevent surprise bills, according to Maura Collins Gru of New Jersey Citizen Action.

2. The legislation will not apply to nearly 70 percent of self-funded and federally regulated insurance plans in the state.

3. Consumers can go to Newswork.org for estimates on how much the bill could save New Jersey in healthcare costs.

4. Ms. Gru said, "Those consumers who are covered by a plan that does not opt in will now have the right to go to arbitration, and cannot have a provider send them to collection unless that provider invokes arbitration."
