New York law to eliminate surprise OON medical bills

The Emergency Services and Surprise Bills law will go into effect in New York on March 31, according to a Buffalo Business First report.

The law was created with input from the Medical Society of the State of New York and payers in the state. The legislation aims to protect patients who receive out-of-network bills for emergency services or from providers working at a participating ambulatory surgery center or hospital, according to the report.

The law requires greater transparency through actions such as:

•    Posting prices online
•    Alerting patients if they will receive care from an OON provider
•    Updating lists to accurately demonstrate which providers are in-network and which are OON
