Mississippi Plans for Creation of Health Insurance Exchange

Mississippi health officials are determining how to most effectively set up and operate a health insurance exchange, a program that must be implemented by Jan. 1, 2014, based on the healthcare reform law, according to a Clarion Ledger report.

Approximately 60 people attended a meeting on Thursday in Jackson to discuss how the exchanges work and how they can be best administered in Mississippi. If states do not set up health insurance exchanges by the 2014 deadline, the federal government will step in and set up exchanges for them.

Mississippi is looking to create exchanges for individual and small-group plans, and criteria for participating insurance providers are being determined. While participation is not mandatory, high participation on the part of insurers is needed to help spread risk.
