Massachusetts Lowers Surcharge on ASC Bills

The Massachusetts government has reduced the surcharge for services provided at ASCs, according an announcement on the Massachusetts Health Safety Net website and a report from Business Insurance.

The surcharge will be 1.55 percent and apply to bills paid on or after Oct. 1.

The current rate, which ends Sept. 30, is 1.9 percent.

Third-party payors, employers administering their own healthcare plans and other entities and individuals that make payments to ASCs for the purchase of their services are required to pay the surcharge. This does not include Medicare and Medicaid programs and their beneficiaries or recipients, other governmental programs of public assistance and their beneficiaries or recipients, and worker's compensation programs.

To calculate the surcharge due, total payments made to Massachusetts ASCs at the end of each calendar month should be multiplied by the surcharge in effect.
