Legislators don't budge despite Floridians facing drastic cuts — 5 key points

Despite healthcare funds shrinking for Floridians, legislators are not rushing to devise a strategy to help the uninsured residents, according to Miami Herald.

Here are five key points:

1. The federal government is only granting Florida $608 million in its Low Income Pool funds to pay hospitals for unpaid care.

2. Sen. Rene Garcia (R-Hialeah) the healthcare budget chairman, stated it is premature to create a backup plan to aid hospitals.

3. The $608 million grant is $400 million less than the state received the year prior. In 2014, Florida received more than $1 billion for its Low Income Pool funds.

4. The federal government provides the grant based on federal estimates of how much money the hospitals need to cover unpaid procedures for patients who would be uninsured if the state expanded Medicaid.

5. Florida legislators are hopeful the federal government will reassess the grant and provide more funds. If not, safety net hospitals in Florida will have to pay for the costs of caring themselves for insured patients.
