Electronic health records will live up to the hype in another technological generation or two, says a commentary in the Journal of the American Medical Association, according to PhysBizTech.
The article, written by James Cimino, MD, argues that if physicians view current EHRs as a starting place for the technology, then eventually they will be rewarded with systems that improve documentation and clinical workflow.
“Rather than complain about the challenges they have introduced, clinicians should recognize that current EHRs are illuminating the opportunities for the next generation of systems that will support clinicians as active partners across the spectrum of healthcare settings and tasks,” he said in the article.
Dr. Cimino’s piece comes amidst mounting dissatisfaction with EHRs. A recent study found a 12 percent increases in dissatisfaction with features from 2010 to 2012.
