House Republicans defend ACA elements: 5 highlights

Despite many party members seeking a complete ACA repeal, various House Republicans are defending parts of the ACA, The Hill reports.

Here are five highlights:

1. In 2016, Republicans pushed forward a replacement plan, the Better Way, which would provide coverage to people with pre-existing conditions if they had no gaps in coverage, or "continuous coverage." The plan would not pertain to Americans with pre-existing conditions that were uninsured or attempting to enroll in coverage.

2. Some officials have changed their stance and say the government should maintain the ACA's protections for patients with pre-existing conditions after the conservative House Freedom Cause pushed for Republican officials to remove these protections.

3. Other Republicans want lawmakers to maintain Medicaid expansion as well as the mandate requiring payers to cover mental health and prescription drug services. Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., previously voiced concern over a Medicaid expansion overhaul, saying it would "affect so many of our disabled individuals and families, and the working poor," according to The Hill.

4. Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., the GOP's chief deputy whip, said the Freedom Caucus' demand for states to apply for waivers to repeal the pre-existing condition protections is "a bridge too far for our members," according to The Hill.

5. Some House legislators presented an amendment similar to the Obama administration's reinsurance program that would help payers coverage costly enrollees.
