House committee approves $161B health, labor spending bill — 4 things to know

This week, the House Appropriations Committee approved a health and labor spending bill totaling $161 billion, according to The Hill.

Here are four things to know:

1. The spending bill falls $3 million below the figure President Obama sought.

2. The legislation features a $1.25 million funding boost for the National Institutes of Health.

3. While a bill has not made it to the House floor for debate in nearly seven years, this bill likely will become a "larger last-minute spending measure without much public debate," according to The Hill.

4. Congress begins a seven-week recess today, making the Sept. 30 deadline for the spending bills fast approaching.
