HHS Supports Meaningful Use, Disputes Calls by Lawmakers to Suspend

Officials in the department of Health and Human Services are disputing questions from Republican lawmakers about the necessity of the $27 billion meaningful use electronic health record incentive program, according to Healthcare IT News.

Four GOP senators sent a letter to Kathleen Sebelius, HHS secretary, questioning if EHRs can lead to higher use of diagnostic testing and increased Medicare billing.

Republican House members have also criticized HHS about Stage 2 meaningful use bonus payments and asked for a delay.

However, President Obama's national health IT coordinator Farzad Mostashari has disregarded the questions and supported calls for lawmakers to be patient with Stage 2 since it does not start until 2014.
