Healthcare Providers Not Incentivized to Provide Superior Care

Lack of transparency persists as a problem with healthcare pricing culture, and some experts attribute this to better care not always equating better profits for health systems, according to a Healthcare IT News report.

Healthcare facilities have little incentive to provide price transparencyDropping nationwide reimbursements are exacerbating the problem, as incentivizing patients to shop around for best prices could significantly hurt hospitals' bottom lines, according to the report. Health systems also have the greatest incentive to treat symptoms of diseases rather than curing a disease.

Though transparency would not necessarily fix problems of unnecessarily overcharging for care, it would provide inspiration for healthcare providers to improve their performances, according to Paul Ginsburg, healthcare economist at the Center for Studying Health System Change.
