Health Information Exchange Platforms — 4 ways it saves consumers and providers

Mr. Niam Yaraghi, a fellow in the Brookings Institution's Center for Technology Innovation, devises a business model revealing ways health information exchange platforms can generate significant revenue for providers and consumers.

Here are four notes:

1. Electronic records save consumers and providers approximately over $77 billion annually, yet providers must overcome challenges to interoperability that have prevented widespread adoption.

2. Mr. Yaraghi's model illustrates how health information exchange platforms can produce revenue by giving real-time data services to different health providers and asynchronous data analytics and customized reports.

3. The profit the model generates would finance operational costs of an interoperable health information network.

4. Mr. Yaraghi explains the business model can only operate if health information exchange platforms are independent of federal and state financial support. The business model differs from other models in its self-sufficiency.
