5 Ways Smaller ASCs Can Prep for ICD-10

Small surgery centers and healthcare practices face all of the same challenges for ICD-10 implementation as larger practices without the same resources. Here are five considerations for small surgery centers as they move through the implementation timeline, according to EHR Intelligence.

1. Time. By the end of the month, have your impact assessments completed and begin monitoring vendor preparation. Establish checkpoints to stay on schedule.

2. Budget. Carefully scrutinize everything that needs a change or upgrade to prepare for the immense cost of implementation. Budgeting ahead of time will be important for a successful transition.

3. Coordination. Collaborate with clearinghouses now to be sure they will be ready to process your claims as of Oct. 1, 2014.

4. Training. A smaller practice may not have a dedicated team of coders, so administrators or other staff members may need to train for ICD-10 to help pick up slack.

5. Productivity. Practices should expect some initial drop in productivity, but comprehensive planning and testing should mitigate some risk.
