Vincent Gamuzza, OD, a New Jersey-based optometrist, pled guilty to healthcare fraud in a federal court earlier this week, according to a Penn Live report.
Here are four things to know:
1. Dr. Gamuzza operated 11 Pearle Vision Centers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey before he was accused of submitting false claims for services at multiple locations.
2. Between December 2015 and July 2016, Dr. Gamuzza pled guilty to submitting claims to Highmark for services that weren't provided at one of the chain's locations.
3. The maximum sentence for the false claim charge is 10 years in prison or a $250,000 fine, or both.
4. A Pittsburgh federal grand jury initially indicted Dr. Gamuzza last year and his sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 23, 2018.
