Could healthcare benefit from a single-payer system?

Richard Gottfried (D) of the New York State Assembly has introduced a bill that would create a statewide single-payer, according to a Crain's New York Business report.

Assemblyman Gottfried has had a version of this legislation since 1999. This week a hearing was held to discuss the New York Health Act.

A few payers testified at the hearing, but the majority of the people present were patients and healthcare workers. Though the legislation had support from organized labor groups, physicians and more, it is unlikely the bill will pass in the state Senate, according to the report.

The bill's supporters argued for the positive financial impact a single-payer system would have.
