Conservative think tanks issue report on need to roll back ACA's Medicaid expansions: 5 key notes

The South Carolina-based Palmetto Promise Institute issued a report on the importance of reversing the ACA's expanded Medicaid programs, the National Review reports.

Here's what you need to know.

1. The conservative think tank argues the expanded programs covering "able-bodied adults" are straining "overextended programs" in many states.

2. The Institute said the Medicaid program is in dire need of reform and has been since before the ACA.

3. The think tank believes the state's that expanded the program will be unable to pay the five percent portion the ACA requires them to do so starting this year. This figure increases to 10 percent in 2020, with the federal government making up the difference.

4. States are allegedly scaling back Medicaid for individuals with disabilities to take full advantage of the ACA's clause of a 90 percent to 100 percent federal match for state's providing coverage to the able bodied.

5. The Institute suggests the following three actions:

  1. Freeze new enrollment in Medicaid and hold current enrollees harmless while not facing coverage disruptions.
  2. End the federal match for state's expanding Medicaid.
  3. Congress, the states and CMS should work together to ensure Medicaid is only for the vulnerable populations.
