Colorado could owe CMS $43M after miscalculation: 5 insights

Colorado's Department of Health Care Policy and Financing estimates it could owe the federal government between $22 million and $43 million after miscalculating the number of Coloradans eligible for an enhanced federal match through Medicare, the Coloradoan reports.

Here's what you should know.

1. The health department's computer miscalculated the number of people eligible for a federal match, resulting in the millions in undeserved benefits.

2. The state corrected the computer's programming.

3. The federal government has yet to request a repayment.

4. The state is creating a proactive $25 million repayment fund.

5. This is the second time an incident of the sorts occurred. In 2016, the state claimed $38 million in Medicaid benefits for unqualified children.
