CMS addresses ICD-10 implementation errors — 5 observations

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services issued clarifications for the measures the agency is taking to resolve isolated errors regarding ICD-10, according to EHR Intelligence.

Here are five observations:

1. CMS has experienced few isolated issues with National Coverage Determinations and Local Coverage Determinations.

2. To address NCD errors, the CMS implemented coding refinements and claims processing instruction updates. CMS plans to implement the updates by Jan. 4, 2016.

3. The agency attributes, in part, LCD issues to the need to update certain LCD criteria. CMS postponed LCD processing claims until it makes the proper LCD criteria updates.

4. CMS stated it addressed ICD-10 errors in a quick and efficient manner.

5. CMS confirmed its ICD-10 readiness in a conference call one week before implementation.
