California Workers' Comp Introduces E-Billing
The California Division of Workers' Compensation has become one of the first states to provide e-billing in workers' compensation by implementing new regulations for standardized paper billing forms and electronic billing standards, according to an Insurance Journal report.
The regulations were approved by the Office of Administrative Law and filed with the California secretary of state on April 18. According to the report, the regulations encourage payors and providers to move toward e-billing, a transition expected to speed up the payment process and save paper.
The regulations standardize billing forms and bill review messages, making it easier for providers to communicate. By statute, claims administrators are required to accept electronic bills. They may develop their own system of accepting the bills or may use a vendor to assist them. Providers, on the other hand, can choose to not participate in electronic billing.
Provisions related to electronic billing become effective Oct. 8, 2012 to allow time for implementation, according to the report.
