Benzinga: The winners and losers of the Aetna-Humana deal: 5 takeaways

Benzinga predicts the winners and losers of the Hartford, Conn.-based Aetna and the Louisville, Ky.-based Humana deal.

Benzinga made such predictions assuming the deal would pass.

Here's what you should know.

1. Aetna would be the deal's big winner. Its shares of state and federal funded Medicaid and Tricare programs would increase and its Medicare Advantage business could triple.

However, if Medicare and Medicare Advantage are a single market, the combined entity would have an insignificant market share of the overall market.

2. Benzinga believes the merger would allow providers easier access to patient medical records.

3. The merger could severely affect low-to-moderate income families if the deal reduces competition.

4. The Department of Justice believes taxpayers would pay more to offset the higher amount of financial assistance needed.

5. If the deal goes through, Benzinga believes physicians could be losers if the deal results in smaller networks and increased co-pays.
