BCBS of Alabama expects losses reaching $135M: 5 things to know

Blue Cross Blue Shield expects losses up to $135 million in 2015, according to AL.com.

Here are five things to know:

1. The payer partially blames the losses on the number of insured patients who obtained coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

2. So far, the payer has tallied losses up to $109 billion.

3. At the beginning of March, BCBS of Alabama will report its final results regarding its losses.  

4. Other Blue Cross plans have reported heavy losses including Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, which reported losses of $400 million in the first two years of the ACA.

5. In 2016, BCBS of Alabama raised rates by an average of 28 percent.
