Are Your EMR Templates Compliant?

Learning to code in conjunction with an electronic medical record is vital for most practices to remain compliant and up-to-date; however, templates must first be sharpened and honed, according to AAPC.

A good EMR will interface with billing software to avoid wrong patient issues, and templates, if used properly, can help capture data and communicate seamlessly with all parties. Work with your EMR to format default templates so they will be customized for your practice and needs, according to the report.

AAPC suggests considering some of the following questions before going live with templates:
•    Are physical examination templates appropriate for age/sex?
•    Are examination templates based on 1997 or 1995 guidelines?
•    Do surgical or procedure templates all for information consent?
•    Does wart destruction template allow for benign and malignant lesion reporting?
