APMs, data exchanges top list of payers' value-based reform goals: 6 key notes

A Washington, D.C.-based National Academy of Medicine report found alternative payment models and health data exchange were among the top priorities for payers in 2017, HealthPayerIntelligence reports.

Here's what you need to know.

1. The report outlined four priorities:

  • Value-based reimbursement models
  • Caregiving and patient engagement
  • Community collaboration around health resources
  • Healthcare data accessibility and screening.

2. The NAM suggests public and private payers develop APMs focused around population based care to advance value-based reimbursement.

3. Payers should assist with eliminating barriers to medical and social services integration.

4. The report encourages payers to provide more opportunities for patient engagement and allow families to make medically-informed decisions.

5. NAM identified collaboration between systems as a priority as well.

The organization believes payers should boost local and state-level benefits to allow for multisectoral health initiatives.

6. Through these suggestions, NAM hopes to reduce healthcare costs.
