After the first half of the Anthem and Cigna antitrust case trial concluded Dec. 2, 2016, WBAA predicts a judge could rule on the case within the next two weeks.

1. The trial's first half focused on whether the merger would hinder competition in national markets.
2. WBAA spoke to Saint Louis University antitrust specialist Tim Greaney. Mr. Greaney said the Department of Justice has submitted ample evidence to prove the two companies are competing for national insurance contracts.
Mr. Greaney sees Cigna as a smaller force, undercutting Anthem and keeping the larger company "on its toes."
3. If the federal judge finds the arguments from the DOJ convincing enough, she could indefinitely postpone the second half of the trial, which would examine the merger's effect on small markets.
